IMPACT – MEDIUM

What is the change? Greek immigration authorities are now scheduling Golden Visa appointments six to 18 months in advance.

What does the change mean? Foreign investors applying for Golden Visas may wait up to 20 months to receive their residence permit. Applicants should consider submitting applications outside of Athens as appointments are especially limited there.

  • Effective date: The delays are ongoing.
  • Visas/permits affected: Golden Visas.
  • Who is affected: Non- EU foreign investors applying for Golden Visas.
  • Impact on processing times: Since appointments are being booked far in advance, processing will be delayed by up to 18 months. Applicants will submit their application and supporting documents at the appointment and will receive a decision within two months of the appointment.

Background: Since its introduction in 2013, the Golden Visa program has been a popular option for foreign investors seeking residence status in Greece. Because of increasing demand for the program, however, appointment slots are limited and are being booked up to 18 months in advance at the Athens office.

Analysis & Comments: Foreign investors applying for Golden Visas should prepare to wait up to 18 months to submit applications and supporting documents. Applicants should consider booking Golden Visa appointments outside of Athens, as earlier appointment dates may be available in other locations.
