IMPACT – MEDIUM

Brazil’s land and water borders will remain closed to foreign nationals until at least Nov. 1. Foreign nationals are able to enter Brazil through international air travel.

Key Points:

  • The extension on the water and land ban was published on Oct. 5 and extended for an additional 30 days.
  • The following individuals are exempt from the ban: Brazilian nationals, immigrants with definitive residence authorization, close family of Brazilian citizens (except for Venezuela citizens), foreign nationals working for international organizations, foreign employees with Brazilian government accreditation, passenger in international transit who will not leave the international area of the airport, individuals on humanitarian missions, technical landings for refueling, provided restricted nationals do not disembark from the aircraft and cargo transportation are also allowed.
  • Road cargo continues to move freely. Previously authorized cross-border humanitarian activity is allowed, as are border crossings for people who live in a “twin city” near the Brazilian border.
  • The restrictions mentioned in this guidance do not prevent foreigners from entering the country by air.

Background: Brazil’s land and water borders have been closed since March. International air travel resumed in August.
