Immigration and business travel policies for the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Saudi Arabia and a number of other countries changed profoundly in 2017. Understanding the trends that drove immigration policy reform last year can help mobility teams to forecast the direction of upcoming changes and consider strategic alternatives for 2018 mobility planning.
U.S. President Donald Trump will continue to pursue a restrictionist agenda, but no one knows for sure what that will mean for high-skilled visa programs or the hundreds of thousands of people in the U.S. on temporary status. The United Kingdom and the European Union have negotiated Brexit “divorce” issues, but their post-Brexit relationship is still unsettled. Brazil and Colombia both implemented new immigration laws in 2017, but additional changes are expected. Saudi Arabia is strictly enforcing new localization rules. And South Africa and Australia continue to lay the groundwork for immigration overhauls of their own.
