Yemen has been redesignated for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and the TPS designation for existing recipients has been extended for an additional 18 months from March 4, 2017 through Sept. 3, 2018.

Key dates and deadlines:

  • To extend their existing TPS, Yemeni nationals must re-register during a 60-day period between Jan. 4, 2017 and March 6, 2017.
  • Those who re-register during the 60-day period and request a new Employment Authorization Document (EAD) will receive one with an expiration date of Sept. 3, 2018.
  • USCIS is also automatically extending the validity of current TPS Yemeni EADs due to expire March 3, 2017 for an additional six months, through Sept. 3, 2017.
  • Eligible Yemeni nationals and individuals without nationality who last resided in Yemen who have not yet applied for TPS may apply during the 180-day initial registration period that runs from Jan. 4, 2017 through July 3, 2017.

BAL Analysis: The Department of Homeland Security encourages applicants to re-register as early as possible. More information is available on the USCIS website. Employers should be aware of the automatic extension of EADs for Yemeni TPS holders.
