What is the change? Immigration applications are facing increased scrutiny as Myanmar’s new government prepares to be seated in January.

What does the change mean? Foreign nationals in need of visas or other immigration services should file applications as early as possible. Authorities may request additional supporting documents. Delays should be expected.

  • Implementation time frame: Immediate and ongoing.
  • Visas/permits affected: All visas, permits and immigration services.
  • Who is affected: Foreign nationals seeking visas, permits and other immigration services.
  • Impact on processing times: The increased scrutiny may cause delays in processing.
  • Business impact:Businesses may need to adjust employee start dates and project timelines.
  • Next steps: Applications and document requirements are expected to face increased scrutiny for the next several months during the transition to the new government.

Background: Myanmar held elections Nov. 8, with Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy winning an overwhelming victory. Pending the change in government, immigration applications are facing increased scrutiny. Requirements are being strictly enforced, and in some cases new procedures may be added.

For example, applications for stay permits and multiple-entry visas sponsored by companies that are registered with the Myanmar Investment Commission now require the applicant’s valid labor registration card, which adds an additional step to the overall process. For renewals, a tax payment slip must now be included with the application. Applications without the appropriate supporting documentation will be returned. The requirement does not apply to company directors listed on the Form 26, nor does the requirement apply to companies registered with the Directorate of Investment and Company Administration.

Officers in all government departments are adhering strictly to prescribed rules and regulations, pending the handover of power to the new government.

BAL Analysis: Delays should be expected as Myanmar transitions to a new government. Applications are facing increased scrutiny and documentation requirements are being strictly enforced. Applicants should submit applications as early as possible and ensure that all required supporting documents are included.
